WFD is implementing a programme to support and enhance accountable democratic governance in Solomon Islands.
Strengthening democracy is an ongoing process. Since 2017, WFD has been working in The Gambia to strengthen the structures and processes of its parliament and to promote greater public involvement in and engagement with political processes. WFD has also been supporting the inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities, women, and young people in political leadership and processes in the west African country by partnering with political parties and civil society organisations (CSOs).
WFD has been working and contributing towards strengthening democracy in Nigeria since 2012, promoting inclusive, open, and transparent governance and championing gender and human rights. We also work to promote the participation of young people, women, and persons with disabilities in elections and support the legislature to review and pass laws protecting women and girls against violence. This is in line with WFD’s strategic country focus of promoting inclusive citizens participation and accountable governance.

This includes working with the Nigerian National Assembly; State Houses of Assembly; Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS); National Youth Service Corps (NYSC); political parties; and civil society organisations that support young people, women, and persons with disabilities.

Parliaments have a vital role to play in realising the Paris Agreement by establishing mechanisms for monitoring and reporting on the progress of domestic climate-related legislation and policies, ensuring transparency and accountability in the implementation of global climate commitments.
