ASEAN women political leadership programme: Building bridges through stories
In a memorable dinner reception hosted as part of WFD’s ASEAN Women’s Political Leadership (WPL) programme Phase II, H.E. Vicky Singmin, Ambassador of Canada to ASEAN, joined 12 extraordinary women political leaders and researchers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, and Thailand. This gathering was part of the Gender Safety Assessment Tool Co-creation Workshop, which brought together voices that embody resilience and leadership in the fight against Violence Against Women in Politics (VAWP). The programme was funded by Global Affairs Canada’s Promoting and Protecting Democracy Fund (Pro-Dem Fund).
The Ambassador highlighted the profound power of storytelling—not just as a means to share experiences but as a deeply healing process that builds bridges of understanding and solidarity among women leaders. Each story shared reflected courage and grace, serving as a reminder of the challenges these women face and the strength they draw from one another.
However, while the importance of healing and community was celebrated, the evening also conveyed a vital message: the responsibility to address VAWP cannot rest solely on the shoulders of these women. Institutions and decision-makers must step up, adopting systematic approaches to create safer political spaces and ensure meaningful support for women leaders.
As the rollout of the gender safety assessment tool is expected in June 2025, this event served as a powerful call to action—one that balances the deeply personal with the profoundly political. It reminded all present that change begins with community but must be sustained through accountability and action.
This dinner was not just a gathering—it was a celebration of resilience, a commitment to progress, and a step toward a more inclusive and democratic future for ASEAN.
