Mphatso Jumbe is a passionate women’s rights advocate and a grassroots mobiliser and entrepreneur with a strong commitment to politics.
Mphatso founded MOVE, a feminist women’s organisation which looks at why young women do not participate in public life, as well as hosting international and national feminist workshops. In the past few years, the organisation has focused on empowering rural women.
Mphatso is one of very few women in Malawi owning a dairy farm, as well as participating in local politics in her village. Her political journey so far has been limited to activities within the party she is a member of, as well as participating in local development committees. Mphatso aims to be elected to parliament in the next election in 2024.
Currently, Mphatso works at the grassroots level to provide direction on building credible development projects with local leaders. She believes it is very possible for her country to move from a poverty-stricken country to a free, democratic middle-income country, aided by women like herself who believe in active citizen engagement in politics and the economy. Mphatso lives and breathes women’s rights, including the right to economic and political participation.
