Ireen is a Member of Parliament for Balaka South Constituency in Malawi, but also, subscribes to the Forum for Democratic Devolution. At Parliament of Malawi, she serves as a member of the Parliamentary Committees on Women Caucus, Transport, and Infrastructure, and Education. She is an ardent advocate for Women empowerment.
In her career, she has invested in advocating for the rights of women and girls, who are the most marginalized in the society. Her passion is to serve and use her current status to transform the landscape of leadership by empowering fellow women to take positions in politics and decision making. She comes from a rural area where everyone especially young girls see her an example of what women can achieve. Winning the parliamentary seat against nine male contestants in 2019 is a huge landmark in her life and a story that inspires many young people especially girls in her constituency.
Besides parliamentary work, she runs a project for young people entitled ‘Give Me Books Not Husband or Wife’ with the aim of encouraging young people to be educated. She believes that to achieve, we need bold and progressive leadership that responds, and is accountable to its people. That’s what she is as a parliamentarian.
