Taiwan

WFD Taiwan is working to strengthening democratic resilience by developing evidence-based research and fostering long-term partnerships between democratic actors in Taiwan and their international counterparts. Since November 2021, WFD has been building a strong evidence base of what works in strengthening democratic resilience. This includes conducting political economy analysis, public perception polling, and facilitating roundtable discussions between Taiwan and international peers. Our research, analysis, and engagement provide democratic actors with valuable insights to reinforce democratic values such as transparency, accountability and inclusion.

Key areas of work

Accountability and transparency

Around the world, WFD is working to make political systems more accountable. In an accountable political system, citizens can hold those in power responsible for their decisions, typically through parliament and civil society. This accountability ensures that there are consequences when things go wrong and that lessons are learned when improvements are needed, leading to better delivery of public services.

In Taiwan, WFD aims to create a solid evidence base to inform the public and democratic actors about improving democratic processes. This evidence will not only provide enhanced understanding of current practices but also facilitate comparisons with international best practices through reciprocal engagement.

Information and democracy

Information integrity and a free, independent media are vital to democracy. Citizens rely on accurate information to make informed decisions, especially when voting or participating in public debates. When information is distorted or falsified, it undermines the democratic process by leading to misinformed choices and eroding trust in institutions. The media also plays a crucial role in ensuring transparency and holding those in power accountable by providing access to diverse perspectives and factual reporting. Therefore, WFD Taiwan is committed to fostering a reliable information ecosystem where the public can access accurate and trustworthy information.

Inclusion

When people are excluded from political power, or when the real concerns of citizens are not addressed, democracy fails to fulfil its promise. This is why inclusion is a core focus of our work. WFD supports the inclusion of young people, marginalised communities, women, and LGBT+ individuals in decision-making processes in Taiwan and around the world.

WFD Taiwan has worked to support the role of young people in politics and civic leadership by collaborating with youth-focused civil society organisations and forums. WFD Taiwan proactively addresses gaps in research and evidence to improve outcomes for LGBT+ individuals, thereby strengthening the incentives for decision-makers' to take action. We partner with civil society organisations that support and advocate for the rights of LGBT+ people, ensuring they have the skills and tools needed to drive change, including tracking and assessing legislation.
