Summary

The way young people understand, practice and nurture democracy, is the focus of the work of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) in North Macedonia. Through its work with young people and institutions, as well as research work, WFD supports the nurturing of democratic values and active citizenship among young people. At a time when democracy globally is exposed to numerous challenges and threats, the preservation of democratic values, the concern for the role of the citizen in society and respect for human and civil rights, becomes an ever more relevant topic.

This study “Do we learn democracy?” analyses the presence and content in which democratic values are presented in the curricula in the secondary education in North Macedonia. The study is based on the analysis of selected curricula and textbooks, as well as interviews with teachers in secondary schools, students and experts. Eight curricula and textbooks for six subjects taught in gymnasiums or vocational schools were analysed (sociology, introduction to law, ethics, philosophy, law and government regulation and civic education).

The analysis is focusing on three key aspects of democracy: representative aspect, human rights and the institutional aspect. The analysis was prepared by Borjan Gjuzelov, PhD, Mariglen Demiri and Artan Limani, PhD.
