About WFD
WFD is the UK public body dedicated to strengthening democracy around the world and is governed by a Board of Governors made up of UK Members of Parliament (MPs) who represent the main UK political parties, as well as independent members. The organisation operates at arm’s length from government ministers.
Inclusive and accountable democratic governance can address the world’s most pressing issues, from combating corruption to tackling climate change. Global democracy ratings are in decline, and democracy everywhere needs work to strengthen, improve and defend it. WFD partners with UK political parties, parliaments, electoral and financial audit institutions to help countries make their governments fairer, more effective and more accountable.
WFD’s approach is problem driven and locally lead. WFD works globally to advance democratic governance on key initiatives such as protecting women from violence in the Middle East, engaging women, young people, and persons with disabilities in politics in sub-Saharan Africa and building trust in democracy in the Western Balkans.
