On 8th of October 2019, the Westminster Foundation for Democracy launched the HUGEN project. HUGEN stands for human rights and gender network. The project aims to support Western Balkans parliaments in reaching international standards for human rights and gender equality.
WFD in North Macedonia helps set up new ways to make state institutions more transparent, through increasing the level of scrutiny over public spending – which we believe will lead to a higher level of trust among citizens in key state institutions’ capabilities.
Six investigative stories analysing the spending of public funds in North Macedonia have been published to allow citizens to access information on how money is distributed by institutions, highlighting the importance of transparent and accountable spending. The stories were prepared by eight journalists, with the support of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), and analyse state spending on pensions, pollution, rare diseases, defence and public broadcasting in North Macedonia.
During the first London Climate Action week, Eleanor Morrisey - Project Coordinator for the Young Greens in WFD’s Multi-Party Office - explains how they are connecting young people interested in sustainability and climate change from England and Wales with their counterparts in North Macedonia.
On 15 September, Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) and the UK Embassy to Macedonia launched an enhanced partnership with the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia.
Since May 2016, WFD organised training, panel discussions and mentoring on the best methods to engage with parliament. The most recent session tackled the skills needed to plan, research and write a policy paper and present the findings to the parliament.
WFD’s programme in Macedonia is set to support a wide range of civil society organisations tackling different human rights issues. WFD will support the CSOs by building their capacity to engage with decision-makers in Macedonia, encouraging a dialogue on human rights based on research and evidence.
WFD is launching a new partnership in Macedonia - connecting civil society with parliament to improve human rights in the country.
